SDLEA Executive Director Arnold Park says they have encountered way too many properties in San Diego that have outdated wiring. He added such wiring issues have caused more trouble than it should have had the homeowner decided to have a total rewiring. “Electrical wirings and circuits may last up to 40 years but that number fully depends on maintenance, environmental condition, pest control, and wear and tear. Not every home can remain safe with wirings spanning a couple of decades. Besides, even if there seems to work perfectly, it does not mean it is safe,” shares Park.

Electricians Explain the Safety Risks of Outdated Wiring

In their social media post, the SDLEA explained how outdated wiring poses a serious safety risk in homes and other establishments. They said it is usually not easy to notice, but there are red flag signs that point to the outdated wiring.

“The thing is outdated wiring gives birth to other more serious electrical safety issues that put everyone in the household in danger. It could also destroy appliances, and even start a fire,” Park explains.

Financial Drawbacks of Outdated Electrical Wiring

Apart from the physical dangers, the San Diego Licensed Electricians Associations also said that other disadvantages come with outdated wiring. For instance, not having the wiring up to code could cancel insurance coverage in the event of a fire or an untoward accident. “Having outdated wiring is seen as negligence on the part of the homeowner. Insurance companies may refuse to cover expenses related to the accident since the policyholder reneged on his duty to update his electrical system,” Park said.

Moreover, the SDLEA also mentioned that outdated wiring is seen as a red flag by any home buyer. They said, in case the homeowner decides to sell his property, a home inspector can immediately see the outdated wiring issue. The buyer, in turn, will adjust his offer, or demand for an electrical improvement from the home seller.
